Our building looks out to the famous Emley Moor mast and is just a stone’s throw from castle hill.

Due to Yorkshire’s abundance of natural resources and river network, the region has strong links with manufacturing dating back to the Industrial Revolution. Coal, for example, was first mined in Yorkshire during the Middle Ages, but demand boomed during the 18th and 19th centuries when huge quantities were required to make iron, fuel steam engines and power factories. Iron ore, steel, wool and cloth all tell a similar story, with Yorkshire regarded as a centre of industry for all of them.

Nearly 300 thousand of Yorkshire’s population are in the industry with an impressive 14% manufacturing output compared to the other parts of the UK at 10%!

As Yorkshire continues to strengthen its reputation as a leader in the technologies, products and industries of the future, it will play a pivotal role in not only reducing the North- South economic divide, but also solving the grand challenges facing our society.

Emley Moor Mast

Also known as Emley Moor transmitting station, is a telecommunications and broadcasting facility on Emley Moor. The station’s iconic concrete tower is 1,084ft (330.4m) tall, and is Grade II listed. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the United Kingdom, the seventh tallest freestanding structure in the EU, fourth tallest tower in the EU, and 24th tallest tower in the world.

Castle Hill and Victoria Tower

The history of human activity on the Castle Hill goes back over 4000 years. The site was developed as an iron age hill fort, surrounded by defensive ditches and ramparts. In the Middle Ages there was a castle on the hill, of which the well remains. The present tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee of 1897.
